This summer the newly refurbished Kew Palace was opened to the public for the first time since its closure in 1996. Three floors of rooms used by George III, Queen Charlotte and their family can be seen.
Years of painstaking research drawing on archaeological and archival sources have gone into recreating the interiors. Princess Elizabeth's bedroom now appears as it would have looked in the early 1800s when she lived at Kew. Visitors to the palace also learn of the unhappiness of the six princesses who were confined to the palace and discouraged from marrying. Instead, they were kept close to their mother, Queen Charlotte, as a source of support during King George's increasing bouts of illness with porphyria.
Maggie Ayre was taken on a tour of the palace by curator Susanne Groom and project manager Jo Thwaites.
Kew Palace will be open until 29 October. | |
