The Royal Ballet - 75th Anniversary03 Jul 2006
This year the Royal Ballet is celebrating its 75 th anniversary. It was Dame Ninette de Valois who founded the company on a pittance and six dancers in 1931, having herself worked with Diaghiliev's Russian company, The Ballet Russe. She was keen to start her own company because there was hardly any ballet to be seen in Britain at that time.

As well as hearing from the people who have become synonymous with the Royal Ballet from the BBC archive, Felicity Finch has been talking to Zoe Anderson, dance critic of the Independent, who has recently published a book to celebrate the anniversary, about some of the people and events which have helped to shape the company over the years.

The Royal Ballet 75 Years by Zoe Anderson is published by Faber
ISBN: 0-571-22795-3 £20.00
