Jane Austen Cookery: Picnics02 June 2006
One of Jane Austen's most biting scenes is the one in Emma where they all go on a picnic to Box Hill, Emma insults Miss Bates and is roundly ticked off by Mr Knightly. But what food would they have taken with them? Anna MacNamee went to see the food writer Hattie Ellis at her home in Lewes where they prepared the sort of picnic pie Jane Austen might have dined on.
