The problems of male depression and how it can affect their partner
Middle aged men - between 45 - 54 years old - are 7 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than women of the same age, but only half as likely to talk about them. A study by the mental health charity Mind found that 37% of men were feeling worried or low at the start of 2009, and with the recession biting and unemployment at its highest for 10 years, that figure is likely to increase. A study has found that one in seven men will develop depression within 6 months of losing their job, so what are the repercussions for their partners this Christmas? Pat Prestage has coped with husband Martin's depression for over fifteen years. She and Martin join Jane to discuss what it is like living with a male partner's depression, along with Jan Scott, Professor of Psychological Medicine at Newcastle University. | |
