Every year up to 2000 children in the UK are diagnosed with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH). It describes a variety of conditions in which the ball and socket of the hip do not develop properly. If it is diagnosed early, the condition can be treated with a simple harness. But campaign groups say too many babies are left undiagnosed due to inadequate screening. If diagnosed late, children may have to undergo surgery throughout their lives. Andreas Roposch is an orthopaedic surgeon and epidemiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Sue Banton is the founder and director of STEPS, a charity offering support and information for all the lower limb conditions in children and young adults. They join Jenni to discuss the importance of better education about the condition.
