Eurovision Song Contest controversy18 March 2009

Israeli Arab Mira Awad is to represent Israel with her Jewish Israeli friend and performer, Noa.

The Eurovision Song Contest is often fraught with political rivalries. But this year, one half of the Israel’s duet entry, Mira Awad, is backed into a political corner as perhaps never before in Eurovision history. As one of the million plus Arab Israelis (Palestinians who hold Israeli citizenship) she was accused of prettifying a racist Israel by fellow Arabs when she chose to represent Israel. And then her Jewish duet partner made Mira’s position even more awkward – by calling on Arabs to support Israel’s January operation in Gaza. Radio 4 reporter Mukul Devichand met Mira in her Tel Aviv home and asked her about the perils of being caught in the middle.
