Jan Wong
Searching for forgiveness in Beijing

In 1972, at the height of the Cultural Revolution, Jan Wong was one of only two Westerners admitted to Beijing University. One day, a Chinese student, Yin Luoyi, sought Jan’s assistance in going to the United States. Jan, then a starry-eyed Maoist reported Yin to the authorities, and Yin promptly disappeared. Thirty-three years later, with the guilt of her actions weighing heavily on her shoulders, Jan returned to China to look for Yin. She tells Jenni about her search for a woman whose name she couldn’t fully remember, in a country with a population of 1.3 billion.

Chinese Whispers by Jan Wong is published by Atlantic Books ISBN: 9781843549741
