Sharia law conjures up for many people the idea of stonings, public executions and discrimination against women in particular, but for all its images of abuse it has been seen by Muslims for centuries as a civilising influence, bringing order and clarity to all aspects of life. Muslim tribunal courts already pass Sharia judgements in the UK ranging from divorce and inheritance to nuisance neighbours.
