On Irene Nemirovsky
The new Woman's Hour serial, starting on Monday, is "A Life of Chekhov" by Irene Némirovsky. Némirovsky's "Suite Francaise" was published in 2004 having laid in a suitcase for fifty years, after its author was killed in Auschwitz. The book became an international bestseller and has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. At the same time, Némirovsky was also working on a slimmer volume - a life of the great Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Michael Hastings, who adapted the book for Woman's Hour, talks to Jane about why this wealthy Jewish émigré was attracted to the life of her famous compatriot, who was himself a grocer's son. | |
