How should the Government reform them?
The Government are looking at reforming the family courts system. Each year the family courts hear around 400,000 difficult cases dealing with divorce and custody. It's estimated that 20,000 of those cases deal with instances of alleged abuse and neglect, which can result in the removal of children from their parents. However, there has been growing disquiet among campaigners about the secrecy of legal proceedings. So, is opening these courts to further public scrutiny compatible with protecting the welfare of vulnerable children? Jane talks to Camilla Cavendish, columnist for The Times and to Ian Johnson, Chief Executive of the British Association of Social Workers.
