Discriminating against children with HIV in schools
The Disability Discrimination Act makes it illegal to discriminate against people living with HIV from the point of diagnosis. Despite this legal protection, the National Aids Trust has uncovered cases of children being turned away and excluded from schools after their HIV status was disclosed or discovered. There are fifteen hundred children living with HIV in the UK, one thousand of them are aged under fifteen. One mother talks to reporter Felicity Finch about the dilemma of revealing her daughter’s HIV status to school staff. Should parents disclose their children’s HIV status?
