On the life and work of the children's writer
The children’s writer, Philippa Pearce, had an idyllic childhood growing up in a beautiful old mill house on the banks of the River Cam just outside Cambridge. Her best known book, Tom’s Midnight Garden, first published 50 years ago is considered a masterpiece of English children's literature, and in it she immortalised the house where she grew up. Her links with home, and with childhood, remained unbroken all her life and her work often drew on her early experiences. Julia Eccleshare, children’s fiction editor for The Guardian and Victor Watson, former head of English at Homerton College, Cambridge, and a personal friend of Philippa Pearce for over 15 years, join Jenni to examine her life and work.
The stage version of Tom’s Midnight Garden runs at the Nottingham Playhouse from Friday 20 June- Saturday 5 July. Adapted by David Wood | |
