Reflections of women who once lived and worked in the fishing communities of East Yorkshire.
For 150 years the fishing industry was the lifeblood of the Yorkshire coast. From Hull to Staithes, entire families were employed catching, baiting, gutting and smoking fish – and you were never too young to start. These days, you can still get great fish and chips in Scarborough and Whitby - but the fishing fleet has shrunk, and in many communities it has disappeared altogether. To capture some of the memories of the women who grew up in those fishing families, York St Johns University has launched the Women’s Voices project. They have released a DVD and Helen Lee has been speaking to project co-ordinator Sue Parkes and hearing from some of the women who once lived and worked in those tough fishing communities on the East Yorkshire coastline.
