Are deaf children and their families failing to get enough support?
Last week the Department of Health announced that 2 million babies in England have had their hearing screened under the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme since it was introduced in 2001.
This screening programme has been widely praised by deaf organisations for identifying deaf children at an earlier age than ever before, often within days of their birth.
However, are deaf children and their families receiving adequate support, information and services once they have been diagnosed? Jane Little discusses this with Chris Underwood of the National Deaf Children’s Society and Professor Adrian Davis, director of the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme.
