Has the development of women’s rights always gone hand in hand with the development of human rights?
Since women are humans, it’s often been thought that women’s rights are a subsection of human rights. But this hasn’t always been the case. Some women have been against women’s rights; some campaigners for women’s rights have argued that since women are different to men, they should be given different rights. Others still have made the point that human rights have often, in effect, been the Rights of Man. And some people in non-Western countries have questioned the extent to which the whole idea of human rights is a Western liberal assumption. So what is the relationship between women’s rights and human rights? And when it comes to the defence of human liberty, does one size fit all?
