History
The Hammer of the Witches29 Mar 2007
In 1487 one of the most controversial books ever written was published in Germany. The Malleus Maleficarum, or ‘The Hammer of the Witches’ was an examination of the supernatural, and a guide on how to identify and try a witch. Some feminist historians have blamed it for sending thousands of women to their deaths – others say those claims are grossly over blown. Now for the first time in nearly 80 years the Malleus has been re-translated and re-issued. Jenni will be joined by its editor, Dr Peter Maxwell-Stuart and Dr Alison Rowlands, Senior Lecturer in European History at the University of Essex to look at why it's been given a bad press over the years.

The Malleus Maleficarum is published by the Manchester University Press ISBN; 0 7190 6443 0 / 0 7190 6442 2
