The Michael Faraday School is in the middle of a large council estate in South London. Two years ago the pupils in year 5 worked with a local firm of architects to design some new playground equipment. Funded by grants from Southwark council and local businesses, the first rather unusual piece recently arrived at the school. It’s a huge camera obscura made from a recycled grain silo. When all its submarine-style hatches are closed, it projects onto its walls a 360 degree image of the playground and school and surrounding flats. When the doors are opened up, they create a sort of tree house/puppet theatre. Quite a change from your average climbing frame! Kim Normanton joins teachers and children to watch its arrival.
