Medical dramas12 September 2006
September 2006 sees the 20th anniversary of the BBC's long-running drama 'Casualty'.

From the reassuring tones of 'Dr Finlay's Casebook' to gritty 'Holby City' and the surreal 'Green Wing', the medical drama continues to attract loyal audiences. But how has the portrayal of women changed in TV medical dramas?

With increasing numbers of male nurses and female surgeons on our screens have we finally moved away from the stereotypical portrayal of the dutiful female nurse and the all-knowing male consultant?

Jenni is joined by Grace Dent, TV critic for the Guardian and by Sara Steinke, lecturer in Film and Media at St Mary's College, University of Surrey to discuss the enduring appeal of the medical drama.
