Katherine Mansfield's 'In a German Pension'18 August 2006
Next week's Woman's Hour drama is an adaptation of Katherine Mansfield's 'In a German Pension'. Mansfield had herself stayed at just such a German pension in 1908 when she had a miscarriage at the age of 20. The stories are satirical and minutely observed portraits of everyday life, the tales of a lone Englishwoman staying at a Bavarian spa, besieged by maternal house-fraus.

Martha talks to Professor Angela Smith of Stirling University and to Deborah Levy, who has dramatised the stories, about the strange correspondence of art and life in Katherine Mansfield's stories.

'In a German Pension' begins on Monday 21st August at 1045 and continues on Woman's Hour throughout the week.
