Over the last four decades, the lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim has earned a reputation for using musical theatre to tackle difficult subjects with an unconventional and uncompromising approach. His characters are complex and troubled and he’s won special admiration for his ability to create rounded, interesting women and place them centre stage.
