In 2004 Maysoon Pachachi returned to her native Iraq after an absence of 35 years. The film-maker went to shoot a documentary about ordinary Iraqis coping with their day-to-day lives in the face of a deteriorating security situation and the Allied occupation.
The resulting film, “Return to The Land Of Wonders”, is being shown as part of the first Iraqi Documentary Film Festival, which opens this weekend at the School of Oriental And African Studies in London.
Maysoon is also one of the founders of the Independent Film And Television College in Baghdad. She talks with Jenni about her film, and how Iraqis are being able to make documentary films free of government intervention for the first time in more than three decades.
