Idan Halili, a 19 year old Israeli woman, asked for exemption from compulsory service in the Israeli army based on a feminist rejection of militarism. Last December, having spent two weeks in military prison because of her refusal to serve, Idan was exempted from conscription; her views, she was told, deemed her "unsuitable".
Jenni Murray is joined by her lawyer, Smadar Ben-Natan and Noa Meir, a spokesperson from the Israeli Army Unit, to discuss why Idan wanted exemption on these grounds, and what life is like for women in the Israeli army. | |
