Music
Kathleen Ferrier24 Apr 2006
This Friday the final of the annual Kathleen Ferrier competition for young professional singers will be held at the Wigmore Hall. More than half a century has passed since the great contralto’s death, but Ferrier remains one of the country’s best loved musicians. Her CD’s still sell thousands of copies every year despite her singing career lasting only 12 years before death from breast cancer. She was born in Blackburn and worked at the Post Office as a telephonist and he only turned to singing when she was sacked after she got married.
