The rise of caesareans04 Apr 2006
Wendy Savage wrote Caesarean Birth in Britain in 1993, in which she argued that caesarean sections should not be performed unnecessarily. Now she has updated the book, revealing that the rates of C sections in Britain have risen dramatically. In only 12 years, the rate has almost doubled. Wendy Savage claims that this is due to doctors' fear of litigation and a shortage of senior medical staff on obstetrics wards. But the rise is also due to increasing numbers of women requesting a caesarean birth.

Jenni is joined by Wendy and James Walker, spokesperson on caesareans for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, to discuss whether women should be denied a choice?

Caesarean Birth in Britain, Revised and Updated by Helen Churchill , Wendy Savage & Colin Francome, published by Middlesex University Press ISBN: 1904750176
