Marriage - Should it be used as a political tool?06 Oct 2009
Conservative party policy

The Conservative Party conference is taking place in Manchester this week. One of the main themes of the conference is ‘Mending our Broken Society’ and today David Willetts the Shadow Secretary of State for Universities and Skills will say that the key to mending our broken society is strengthening families and will set out plans to do so. In July this year the report Every Family Matters recommended that marriage should be recognised in the tax system as it offered the best environment for physical and mental health for everyone, especially children. This is now Conservative Party policy and they are committed to changing the tax system to make it more family-friendly and to ensure that marriage is recognised. But in a democracy where more people are choosing not to marry, and over 45% of children born outside marriage, is this a legitimate goal or just hypocritical moralising? Jenni discusses the issues with Philippa Stroud, Executive Director, Centre for Social Justice; and Katherine Rake, Family and Parenting Institute
