The rising age of foster carers19th May 2009

Why a crisis may be looming for the UK’s foster care workforce

The UK is in desperate need of more foster carers. According to a recent survey by the charity Fostering Network, two-thirds of carers are in their fifties or above. These figures, released to coincide with “Foster Care Fortnight”, hint at the need for a younger generation of carers to take up the profession. Fostering Network’s Helen Clarke explains the significance of this new research. Jane is also joined by two foster carers at opposite ends of their careers: Stephanie Walsh, a thirty-five year old single carer; and Pauline Fitter, a sixty-eight year old who, with her husband, has cared for over five-hundred children since the 1960s.
