The Grammy Award-winning musician, Sharon Isbin, has been described as America’s guitarist laureate and 'the Monet of the classical guitar'. From English folksongs such as The Drunken Sailor to beautiful collaborations with Joan Baez, her new album demonstrates the range of an oft-overlooked instrument. Her receipt of the Grammy for best instrumental soloist performance in 2001 was the first time the award had been given to a guitarist in nearly three decades. Sharon plays live in the studio, and talks to Jane Garvey about her career. How did one of her CDs end up in space? Why did Joan Baez send her 91-year old mother to one of her performances? And why are there so few women in the world of classical guitar?
