Health
Autism Bill24 Feb 2009
Who is responsible for care?

Over half a million children and adults in the UK have autism but many do not get the services they need. According to recent research by the National Autistic Society there is a lack of even basic support and one in three adults with the condition are experiencing serious mental health difficulties as a result. A Private Member’s Bill has its second reading this week, and, if introduced would aim to secure access to appropriate services and support for people with autism as well as placing a duty on local authorities to recognise their responsibilities towards people with the condition. Robyn Steward is twenty two and has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism, she speaks to Jane about her experiences. Jane discusses the issues, and who is responsible for care, with Amanda Batten, Head of Policy and Campaigns at the National Autistic Society and Peter Murphy, a member of the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services.
