 | | | | Should measles vaccination be compulsory? | 18 Feb 2009 | | |
Could a “no jab, no school” rule be the solution to increasing infection rates?
There’s been an alarming rise in the number of cases of measles. The latest figures for England and Wales show a 24 fold increase over the last decade, which experts believe is due to low uptake of the MMR vaccine, following the health scare about side effects in 1998. In the United States parents are obliged to show a certificate of vaccination in order to have their child accepted into a school or a day care centre. So could this system work in Britain? Or is better information and education the solution? Dr. Anne Gershon, President of Infectious Diseases Society of America, outlines the situation in the US. Jenni discusses the issues with Professor Steve Field, Chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, and Dr Vivienne Nathanson, Head of Science and Ethics at the British Medical Association.
