Books
Elizabeth Bowen08 Dec 2008
The life and work of the celebrated Anglo-Irish writer

Elizabeth Bowen (1899 -1973) was one of the most distinguished writers of her generation, best known for classic novels such as The Death of the Heart and The Heat of the Day. She wrote impeccable prose in which she studied the complex nature of love and frustration, demonstrating intense psychological insight. This is evident in her 1932 novel To The North, which has been adapted for this week’s Woman’s Hour drama. Jane talks to critic and biographer Hermione Lee and the author Penelope Lively about Elizabeth Bowen's fascinating life and long literary career, and discovers what inspired her to write To The North.
