Mohammed Keshtgar: Breast cancer surgery14 Oct 2008
Pioneering surgeon on the latest developments and treatments

Mohammed Keshtgar is the first consultant breast surgeon in the country to perform keyhole mastectomies - the removal of the whole breast through a small incision under the nipple. He is also pioneering the use of new techniques in sentinel node biopsy and radio therapy during breast surgery which could mean that – one day - cancer patients will receive all their treatment in ‘one hit’. In the future, once a patient leaves the operating theatre, there should be no need for a second operation to remove the lymph nodes [should the cancer have spread] and an end to weeks of daily radio therapy treatments. Mohammed Keshtgar joins Jane to talk about his pioneering work in breast cancer surgery and about the future of breast cancer treatment.
