When an individual becomes mentally ill, the ripple effects can be felt by many of those close to them. It can be especially difficult for the children and partner to know how to cope, and this can add to the guilt and sense of failure of the person with mental health problems. Two years ago Veronica developed severe anxiety, panic attacks and depression resulting in her having to take six months off work from her job in senior management. She’s married to Anthony and they have three children, the oldest is 13-year-old David and the youngest is 10-year-old Joseph. Our reporter Felicity Finch went to meet Veronica, Anthony and their two sons at their home in the North East to talk about the impact her illness had on family life.
