'Carpentaria' by Alexis Wright has caused something of a literary storm in her native Australia, beating writers such as Peter Carey to win the major national prize, the Miles Franklin Literary Award. It’s an extraordinary, sweeping piece of storytelling – one critic wrote of it that “it sings”. Its cast is dominated by the Aboriginal inhabitants of a fictional town in north-western Queensland, and the author herself has her roots in the Aboriginal community. She joins Sheila to talk about the book and its success, her interest in Aboriginal issues and what it meant when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said “sorry”.
