Melanie Challenger at Volunteer Point, Antarctica
Writer in Residence for the British Antarctic Survey

Last year, Melanie Challenger was chosen as the Writer in Residence for the British Antarctic Survey. The aim of her research was to gather material for her book Extinction which is a poetical and philosophical meditation. Her four month voyage to the continent, which ended in January this year, concluded with a stay in Chile’s remote Ascension Island, where she had extremely close encounters with a blue whale.

Melanie talks to Jenni about why she has used the threat of extinction facing the blue whale as a motif for her work.
