Susannah is the most performed American opera in the United States after Porgy and Bess, but only now is it to receive its first professional production in the UK. It’s the story of a young girl who dreams of leaving her Tennessee valley home to experience the world beyond the mountains; but her dreams are shattered when she is falsely accused of immorality. The opera was written in the fifties against the backdrop of McCarthyism so does its heroine’s fate still resonate with us? Jane is joined by Donna Bateman who plays Susannah in English Touring Opera’s new production, and by Ash Khandekar, the editor of Opera Now.
