Food
Borage16 August 2007
The herb that is meant to relieve boredom and dispell melancholy.

It has definitely been Pimms weather this week and it needs, of course, lots of ice, cucumber, orange, lemon and most of us put mint in it as well because that is what tends to grow profusely in the average garden. But the herb you are supposed to put into the mix is borage. It is said to "relieve boredom and dispell melancholy" – so maybe you don’t need the Pimms at all! Borage is greatly in demand as a herbal remedy. Vast amounts of it are grown in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and it is said to be the best borage anywhere in the world. Judy Merry went to meet farmer Rosie Williams, herbalist Anne McIntyre and the agricultural adviser Craig May.
