The Victorian cult of Mesmerism10 April 2007
In the 1830s and '40s in Britain, the hot topic was that of mesmerism. First developed by Franz Mesmer, it claimed that magnetic powers could help people with much needed pain relief.
Jenni discusses the popularity and controversy surrounding mesmerism with novelist Barbara Ewing and Dr Catherine Wynne, lecturer in 19th century literature at the University of Hull.
