Anorexia has one of the highest mortality rates of any mental illness. Approximately one in five people with the condition die prematurely. Earlier this month, health authorities in Madrid acted to close a pro-anorexia website, accusing it of endangering the lives of teenage girls. In Britain health experts are increasingly worried about the proliferation of websites that promote anorexia as a lifestyle choice rather than a potentially fatal disease. Last week the Eating Disorders Association said there were more than 500 pro-anorexia sites on the internet.
To discuss the extent of this problem and the issues it raises, Carolyn is joined by Professor Janet Treasure, Head of the Eating Disorder Service at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London and Guys, Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital and Martin Ball, whose 19 year old daughter Kirsty has suffered with anorexia for eight years.
Professor Treasure is actively seeking participants for a variety of research projects into all aspects of eating disorders including a comprehensive support programme for carers.
