A musical fuelled largely by anger, ‘Caroline, or Change’ split the New York critics when it was first shown on Broadway. This week sees its opening at the National Theatre. A musical set in a time of tumultuous social and political change in the United States in 1963, the heroine is located at a moment in her life when she has to either sink or swim - when the familiar things in her world are giving way all around her. Tonya Pinkins, repeating her Broadway performance as the Caroline of the title, plays the black maid to a Southern Jewish family.
