Joan Rice’s WAAF Diaries14 August 2006
Joan Rice
Joan Rice says her ambitions were not those of her 1930s contemporaries: she wanted to write and to travel, to experience adventure. So when World War II was declared she left her typing job and enrolled immediately in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.

She tells Jenni about her newly-published diaries, “Sand in My Shoes,” which give us a glimpse into her world of bombing raids, an exciting posting to Egypt, dashing airmen and the highs and lows of wartime love.

'Sand in My Shoes' is published by Harper Press, ISBN number 0-00-722820-1.
