When the Chernobyl nuclear reactor melted down in 1986, the blast spread more than twenty times the combined radioactivity of the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The tragic event led to the evacuation of 135,000 people, with many dying or becoming sick with acute radiation sickness.
It was hardly surprising that the prognosis for Chernobyl and the surrounding area - known as the Zone of Alienation – was grim. But twenty years on, when Mary Mycio’s curiosity about Chernobyl compelled her to explore the world’s only radioactive wilderness, instead of complete desolation she found a new ecosystem teaming with wildlife.
