Living Dolls - Natasha Walter on the return of sexism
Society sells women an airbrushed, highly sexualised and narrow vision of femininity, according to the feminist Natasha Walter. In her new book, she interviews sex workers, lap dancers and glamour models, as well as young women with more conventional jobs. She reports on what she calls the dangerous situation that women are facing today, now that pornography and the sex industry have moved from the margins of culture to take up a central position. If so many girls’ dreams stop at fame, glamour and endorsement by men, how much can this be called sexual liberation? How did the watchwords of feminism - ‘choice’, ‘empowerment’ and ‘liberation’ - become so quickly distorted? She joins Jenni to discuss the issues.
