Every day in South Africa more than 1000 people are newly infected by HIV and 1000 people die from AIDS related causes. Of the million people who are in urgent need of antiretroviral drugs, only 200,000 are receiving them. Ten percent of young people aged 15-24 are HIV positive - young women comprise 77% of this figure, with a clear connection between violence against women and HIV/AIDS. So what’s being done to help those living with the disease, as well as educating the wider population of the risks. To mark World AIDS Day, Jane is joined by Annie Lennox, whose AIDS charity SING was set up to raise funds and awareness and to bring about support and change for the women and children in South Africa who are the frontline victims of HIV and AIDS. They are joined from South Africa by Yoliswa Notshe, an HIV/AIDS co-ordinator with the charity Action Aid.
