A new BBC drama claims married ballerina Margot Fonteyn enjoyed a passionate affair with her gay dance partner, Rudolf Nureyev, 19 years her junior. Their electric onstage partnership transformed the fortunes of the ageing Fonteyn, extending her career by 17 years. She retired in 1979, her sixtieth year and the Royal Ballet honoured her with the title, prima ballerina assoluta. Jane is joined by Anne-Marie Duff, the BAFTA nominated Shameless actor who is playing the title role in the film, and Meredith Daneman, a former student at the Royal Ballet School and Margot Fonteyn’s biographer.
