 The rise of the paparazzi star
Brigitte Bardot was the original sex kitten, whose blonde bombshell looks made her one of the greatest fashion icons of the 20th century. Her rise to fame in the early 60s coincided with, and helped to create, a new breed of photography, in which stars were snapped as they went about their daily lives. The street paparazzi operated outside the strict control of film publicity, and fed a growing public desire for intimate portrayals of celebrities. To coincide with Brigitte Bardot’s 75th birthday, and the 50th anniversary of the paparazzi, a photography exhibition opening today charts the rise of Bardot as a paparazzi star, and the development of a new image of womanhood and female sexuality. Jenni talks to The Times arts critic Joanna Pitman, and the author of ‘Waiting for Bardot’, Andy Martin.
