 Practising without indemnity insurance
There are currently some 200 registered independent midwives practicing in the UK . Most care principally for women planning home births, and are responsible for an estimated 4- 5,000 births a year. At the end of 2006, the Chief Nursing Officer for England, Christine Beasley issued a letter to all independent midwives requesting they obtain professional indemnity insurance within 18 months or cease to practice in their work outside the NHS. Beyond the deadline, without any insurance currently available to them in this capacity, independent midwives continue to practice without it. A paper has been published in the Clinical Risk journal highlighting the dangers of the situation and calling on the government for action. Jane is joined by Catherine Hopkins, Legal Director of Action Against Medical Accidents and author of the paper, and Brenda van de Kooy from Independent Midwives UK, to discuss the issues at hand, the future of independent midwifery and the confusion in communication that surrounds any progress to date.Independent Midwives UK Nursing and Midwifery Council Action Against Medical AccidentsDisclaimer The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites. | |
