Writers creating badly behaved female characters02 July 2009
Zoe Heller courtesy of Jacques Brouchier
Unpleasant female fictional characters

Zoe Heller has acquired a reputation for creating unlikeable characters – Barbara from Notes On A Scandal and Audrey from her most recent novel, The Believers. But does Zoe herself dislike her characters? And what’s it like to try and write sympathetically about fairly monstrous people? Jenni talks to Zoe Heller and fellow writer Esther Freud about the pleasures and otherwise of creating and reading about unlikeable characters in fiction.
