Lindsay Duncan as Margaret Thatcher
The challenge of playing the iron lady

Lindsay Duncan plays Margaret Thatcher in a new BBC production, which dramatises the demise of Britain’s first female prime minister. We’re familiar with the iron lady at war from The Falklands Play; the young aspiring politician in The Long Walk to Finchley; and, countless cameo impersonations of the former premier from film and television. But in Margaret we see a flawed leader losing her grip on power – so what are the challenges of playing such an iconic, yet divisive figure? Jenni talks to Lindsay Duncan about Margaret Thatcher, acting and politics.
Margaret is broadcast on Thursday 26 February at 9pm on BBC Two
