The Women of Motown07 Jan 2009
Beverley Knight
Celebrating the Women of Detroit City’s Finest Record Label

2009 marks fifty years of Motown Records and Berry Gordy’s mission to create ‘The Sound of Young America’. Motown created an astonishing roster of acts, ranging from ‘Little Stevie Wonder’ to The Temptations, as well as the supreme divas- Diana Ross and Martha Reeves. Behind the scenes Gordy wasn’t alone in creating the Motown sound. Maxine Powell's finishing school brought refinement and sophistication to many of the female singers and Suzanne de Passe nurtured the careers of Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie as a Motown executive during the 1970s. Joining Jenni is Adam White, music journalist and Motown historian, and soul singer, Beverley Knight.
