On November 9th 1908, Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was unanimously elected mayor of Aldeburgh, the first woman in the UK to hold this position. Along with her daughter Louisa, also a doctor, the pair were passionate advocates for women’s rights and during the First World War, Louisa established the UK’s first military hospital to be staffed entirely by women. This Friday sees the unveiling of a plaque honouring the Endell Street Military Hospital. Jane talks to the biographer of the Garretts, Elizabeth Crawford and to Dr Jennian Geddes, the instigator of the plaque, to learn more about this dynamic mother and daughter, both commemorated this week.
